Linocut or linoleum print is a relief printing process where a design is cut into a linoleum sheet using various sizes and shapes of knives or gouges and then inked with a brayer (roller). Paper is impressed on the inked linoleum by hand with a barren or with a mechanical press, thereby transferring the design onto the paper.
This limited edition linocut print features a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker on a tree trunk. The piece was inspired by a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker that regularly visited our neighbor's Sugar Maple Tree one summer. It's the only Sapsucker I've seen near our Northeast Kansas backyard.
The image was carved in my studio and printed using Cranfield Relief Ink on Canson XL neutral pH paper.
Each print includes the edition number (1/20, 2/20, 3/20, etc.), the title (Tap, Tap, Sap—Yellow-bellied Sapsucker), and my signature with date. A total of 20 prints exist. Please note that each print was hand inked and pulled by me in my studio, so slight variations occur within each edition.
